Inforlogic’s Robin Cook looks at how Infor SyteLEAN, as an extension to Infor CloudSuite Industrial (SyteLine), is helping manufacturers to optimise their stock position and mitigate supply chain complexity.
A recent McKinsey report highlighted that supply chains continue to remain vulnerable. In the face of relentless disruption, inventory and logistics managers must constantly balance their efforts to reinforce supply chains and continually improve processes to ensure demand is met effectively.
Against this backdrop, knowing your stock position is non-negotiable. Yet despite this, many manufacturers are still reliant on spreadsheets or systems which can’t deliver the real-time insights necessary to meet demand in the most efficient way.
To manage challenges such as stockouts and tracking errors effectively, a modern, fit-for-purpose system is essential. From accurate Bill of Materials (BoMs) to ensuring the correct levels of buffer stock, digital capabilities that include remote live visibility, data granularity, analytics, and workflows to highlight gaps or anomalies that require intervention are a core component of an effective supply chain strategy. But while APS and MRP systems deliver this capability, they can, in some cases, represent a sledgehammer to crack a nut scenario, bringing additional complexity.
Infor SyteLEAN, as an extension to Infor CloudSuite Industrial (SyteLine), bridges this gap. Leveraging Kanban principles to deliver optimised inventory management based on usage reports and livestock levels, it removes overstocking and out-of-stock problems to reduce complexity.
Calculating inventory levels based on real-world, real-time sales and usage, it averts shortages without needing to rely on MRP or APS. Because it’s easy to use and acts as an extension to Infor SyteLine Industrial, it represents a strong fit for items that are regularly purchased or manufactured.
Infor SyteLEANSyteLEAN’s PullSystem automatically ‘right-sizes’ the relevant inventory items based on average use, factoring in variability, and then pulls the replacement orders as soon as the inventory is consumed. This model of replenishment facilitates optimal stock levels by creating Kanban-planned orders that are mapped against APS/MRP orders for review before they are uploaded into the SyteLine Planner Workbench.
SyteLEAN then enables manufacturers to automatically adjust inventory levels to accommodate changes in demand or product mix, utilising LEAN principles, which are easier and more agile to deploy than those in MRP.
In a world where supply chain volatility shows few signs of abating, manufacturers can’t afford to play fast and loose with their inventory. Visibility and control are crucial in mitigating risk, supporting cost consolidation and optimising performance.
